Tampa, Fla. \u2013 An estimated two thirds of adults nationwide are overweight and a third are obese. As many of these individuals make an effort to lose the weight, bariatric surgery is increasing. A recent study in the journal Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases shows that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and adjustable gastric banding are the most common procedures to treat morbid obesity. The average patient is close to 46 years old and 79 percent of patients are women.<\/p>\n

Bariatric surgery can sometimes lead to a heightened risk of having a blood clot. Other triggers that could cause a VTE include increased age, higher BMI, male gender, and family history of VTE.
