Mildred Jones, 87, is the last person you\u2019d expect to see ogling her Smartphone. A native of Oxnard, where she grew up \u201cby the wharves\u201d during the Great Depression, she hadn\u2019t paid much attention to technology\u2014except for an occasional science fiction movie \u2013 until lately. \u201cMy granddaughter is a high school senior, and she showed me her Smartphone,\u201d Mrs. Jones says, \u201cI couldn\u2019t get enough of it, so I bought my own.\u201d Her Smartphone is purple and came with \u201ca jillion apps,\u201d asserts the more techno-savvy elder, \u201cand even the ring tone\u2019s nice; it\u2019s meant to sound like Darth Vader.\u201d<\/p>\n
Elders all over America are waiting in line for Smartphones and iPads and kindling newfound appreciation for their Kindles. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to be left behind,\u201d explains Mrs. Jones, \u201cafter all, we\u2019re not gone yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
