\nMore than 2,000 hospitals \u2014 including some nationally recognized ones \u2014 will be penalized by
\nthe government starting in October because many of their patients are readmitted soon after
\ndischarge, new records show.<\/p>\n
\nyear as the government begins a wide-ranging push to start paying health care providers based on
\nthe quality of care they provide.<\/p>\n
\nthe government considers readmissions a prime symptom of an overly expensive and
\nuncoordinated health system. Hospitals have had little financial incentive to ensure patients get
\nthe care they need once they leave, and in fact they benefit financially when patients don\u2019t
\nrecover and return for more treatment.<\/p>\n
