Further testing showed that the town’s distribution system still tested positive for coliform bacteria the next day they sampled the water, but not for E. coli. Most people do know that artificial sweeteners are highly dangerous to their health. It acted to reject crucial drugs used to treat heart conditions, AIDS patients and those undergoing chemotherapy by directing the medication back into the patient’s intestines, meaning it was not being absorbed. That means the medications were useless.

As for the other testing supposedly carried out by the FDA, it might be best if you just did the research on sucralose testing to find out the real story, not the one the makers of the product want you to hear so you buy their product. They are also wondering why, if this particular investigation has been ongoing since 2005, it will take until 2013 to make any serious progress.

Lowell, Oregon has been told for the fourth year running that their water is polluted with blue-green algae, and after four years, they are now going to test it to see if it is really toxic or not. There are apparently different varieties of algae, some not as potent as the blue-green strain. That however begs the question of why it took city administrators four years to get their act together and start doing some tests. Additionally, whose definition of acceptable algae contamination do people want to accept? Why risk any amount of algae in the water?

The city has about 1,000 residents that are on pins and needles waiting to find out what the latest results are in testing their water. In the meantime, they have been told not to drink or touch the water. While city officials indicate that some of the algae may be filtered out by water purification plants, this varied from place to place. It was an ordinary day, until someone went to get a glass of water and reeled back in disgust when they got a good whiff of what came out of the tap. Water contamination is, unfortunately, far too common these days, but this accident bordered on the bizarre. A cleaning contractor mistakenly flushed underground tanks at a hangar at the local airport. That meant that about 200,000 gallons of jet fuel contaminated water was possibly mixed into the city’s water lines, preventing over 18,000 residents from using the water. If they wanted water, they had to visit one of three distribution centers set up in response to this crisis. It’s a classic misstatement these days when you read articles about a process called “fracking” that extracts oil from and natural gas from rock formation. Fracking is also referred to as hydraulic fracturing or hydrofracking and, contrary to media reports that the process uses a “brine” for the process, the fluid used is a compound of over 500 nasty chemicals. “In this particular story, you’ve got a homeowner voicing concerns about the ground and surface water that comes downstream to her land from a feedlot just up the road. It has a huge holding pond that has been breaching its sides, spilling manure contaminated water that runs into neighboring properties. It seems the feedlot’s holding pond dam burst in 2003 and 2005. Testing in 2005 showed the fecal count was extremely high. In view of this kind of a history, the regulatory agency for the area issued an enforcement order on the feedlot in 2008. The order stated they needed to separate run-off from a spring that was on the feedlot property. One wonders why the agency waited so long to issue an order. According to the agency, the feedlot was built to provincial standards, including a catch basin to hold surface water and culverts to mitigate the runoff problem.

“It doesn’t look like the plant’s system is working, which prompted complaints to the agency,” Wardell said.

The feedlot manager says the water is not seeping into the ground. If it is not, then where do they think it is going? “The truly shocking thing is that the contaminated water is going right into the local drinking water supply. Even if the city has a relatively good water filtration plant, they cannot get everything out of the water. Over time, the combination of many chemicals and pollutants will affect people’s health, even at low levels,” Wardell said. Sadly, the company, when they were notified what they were doing, replied they thought they had been dumping into a drain leading to the sewage treatment plant. They were actually dumping straight into the river and no one knows how long that had been going on. “Despite being told what they were doing wrong, when inspectors checked back in two months, they found the company had done nothing to remedy the situation. This is not only an environmental problem, but it will soon turn into a political flap, as a local councilman has his name on the sign for the new play park,” Wardell said.

It has long been known that arsenic in drinking water is not good for you. It has only been recently that a new study has brought forth new evidence of the links between arsenic in your drinking water and heart disease. If you smoke and also drink arsenic laced water, your risks are even higher.

The first link made between heart disease and arsenic laced drinking water was discovered in 1980 in a small town in Chile. They had a dismal record of 17 deaths due to heart attacks in people younger than 40 years old. Over the years since that revelation, the connection between the water and heart attacks has grown stronger. There were 2,000 people involved in the study, tested every two years for about six and a half years. The results were sobering to say the least.

Overall, just about 30 percent of the deaths caused by heart attacks were attributed, in part, to the levels of arsenic in the well water the participants were drinking. Although the risk associated with drinking arsenic contaminated water was high, when linked with those that smoked, or had smoked in the past, the detrimental effects on the heart were evidently intensified. The study also suggested that arsenic laced water led to hardening of the arteries.

The water looks fine, smells fine and has no taste and unfortunately, even if you think it is contaminated and boil it, boiling only concentrates arsenic. More than 50 years after the fiasco that was Pacific Gas & Electric Company’s release of chromium 6 contaminated water into the groundwater around Hinkley, Calif., the company is now forming an advisory committee related to the cleanup of contaminated groundwater. The committee is to be comprised of local leaders and residents to act as monitors and share their concerns on the company’s environmental programs.

The story behind the story here is that PG&E used chromium 6 to kill microbes and give their cooling tower corrosion protection. This went on all through the ’60s and ’70s, long before anyone cottoned on to the cancer risks of chromium 6.

The company also drained chromium 6 contaminated water from the cooling tower, into unlined ponds; where it promptly leached into the town’s groundwater. “If residents had known that was happening, they could have handled the issue by checking into the effectiveness of water distillers. If they wanted clean, fresh and safe water, water distillers would have been and are the best solution,” Wardell said.

Flash forward to 2011 and the town wants to implement civil penalties against the company for not controlling the spread of a chromium 6 contaminated plume beyond boundaries that were set out in 2008. It seems that not much was really done to deal with the problem that initially resulted in a lawsuit that settled in favor of the town residents for $333 million.

Apparently the company has been discussing, for a long time, how to clean things up. The town now feels the time for discussion has passed and it’s time for action to clean up the groundwater. “What the future may hold for Hinkley is anyone’s guess, but suffice it to say that cleaning up their groundwater, something that should have been done a long time ago, is a good place to start. Town residents might want to do some research into the benefits of water distillers to ensure clean and fresh water, on demand,” Wardell said.

“While this story is not as bad as it could have been, it does still point out the need for a different and better backup if you are faced with contaminated water in your town. Bethlehem’s water may have been OK, but the town officials were not taking any chances. They issued a boil water advisory for their 2,200 residents. And then, testing began to determine coliform levels. The cause of this emergency was a massive water main break; a high-volume main feed that carried 5 million gallons. The 34-inch pipe cracked wide open, 24 feet underground, which made it really hard to locate. In fact it took town crews two days to find it.

When the community of Grand Prairie woke up one morning, their landscape was decorated with a dark ash coating, as the result of a major fire in the area that destroyed a 400,000 sq. ft. warehouse. It was one of those fires that no one hopes to fight again, involving 66 firefighters, 12 fire rigs and engines from multiple surrounding fire departments. It was one of the worst conflagrations people had seen in years.

The fire took many hours to finally snuff out and with it being extinguished, came blowing ash and large plumes of grey and black smoke. The air and water in the area would take a beating. In fact, the water quality would be affected several miles away from the fire. Luckily, the warehouse that went up in flames did not have toxic chemicals stored inside that may have compromised the local aquifers.

Nonetheless, the ash settling in various streams, lakes, rivers and wells would add extra concerns about the quality of the drinking water. While no one likes to be the bearer of bad news, there is a good chance that any water tankers bringing water into a flooded region where the water treatment plant has been compromised is hauling contaminated water. If a water treatment plant handles the water and cleans it up before it delivers it to homes, it should be safe. Unfortunately, water treatment plants are so out-of-date that they cannot keep up with the ever-increasing load of new pollutants in the water sources. There is just about everything, including the kitchen sink, in water on tap in American’s homes. Think sex hormones, street drugs, herbicides, pesticides, agricultural wastewater, chemical runoff from fracking for gas, and bacteria.

“Get as creative as you like and chances are you will hit the nail on the head when you list what you think is in your water – the water you are about to sip from your glass. Typically speaking, water, before it gets to a home, is pre-treated. That means it is pumped in from the source, pre-screened to pick out the large debris and is stored. The next step is typically pre-chlorination and pre-conditioning. For instance, the facility may try to play with the pH level. “If the pH level is under 7, the idea is to bring it up to 7 or above, making the water alkaline,” Wardell said.

Acidic water is a hazard to one’s health and may cause a body to leech nutrients from teeth and bones to level the acidity of the water. Long-term consumption of acidic water is not healthy. Despite that, in some treatment plants, the pH step is skipped to save time and money.

“Like to see your water clear and appealing? Since looks count, the plant may step the water into the flocculation process. This means that plant workers toss some small particles into the water and any material present that colors the water will stick to these particles and rise to the top and are skimmed off; sort of like skimming fat from the top of gravy,” Wardell said.

The next step for the water is the filtration or treatment. Unfortunately, most municipal facilities still only use a sand-bed filter, which is not very effective and leaves behind a lot of stuff that should not be left behind. As the water slowly drains through the sand, those items or particles that are smaller drain through.

This works if the sand is fine enough, but in many instances, the sand is coarse and that leaves a long laundry list of bacteria, viruses and chemicals behind. “You also have to remember that there are now synthetic chemicals that are even smaller in size than a water molecule, so they won’t get filtered out either,” Wardell said.

To add insult to injury, most water is still treated with chlorine, a chemical proven to be bad for human health. “When you go swimming, the pool test kit is supposed to register 1 part per million of chlorine. On the other hand, drinking water is allowed to be at 3 parts per million. That’s food for thought,” Wardell said. Many Americans with relatives in Haiti are receiving the devastating news that their loved ones have died; died of cholera, a death caused by unclean water. This case is ongoing and is highly disturbing, as well. The people living in the smallish town of Colstrip, Montana cannot drink the water in their wells because it is highly contaminated with coal ash byproducts. There are four large power plants closeby that are forever running afoul of regulations laid out by the state’s environmental authority. That is largely due to the fact that the agency does not do much in the way of overseeing the plants or regulating the situation.

The town has been trying for quite some time now to get something done about their water and the source of the pollution, but no one seems to be listening. The company that controls the power plants has already settled one lawsuit, paying out $25 million to plaintiffs.

You would think that would spur them on to clean up their act. Not so. Well over 1,000 people gave a piece of their mind at a recent meeting discussing fracking’s impact on the environment and groundwater in the areas being fracked. It wasn’t what you would call a quiet and orderly meeting, nor did it really stay on point.

The point was to ask for input from the public to design a study about how hydraulic fracturing affected groundwater. Many of the people at the meeting wondered why anyone would waste the time on such a study when it was more than clear, based on evidence, that fracking did affect local groundwater.

Many of the speakers in the room had personal anecdotal evidence of drinking the end results of fracking from their taps at home. Why spend time and money on a study when the effects were clear to those at the meeting? Some of the people in the room had direct experience with using water distillers to avoid the contaminated water in their homes and businesses. The people who set up the meeting tried to retain control by asking the crowd not to debate the merits of fracking. The residents, who had glasses of water that were “off,” piped up that when an unknown mixture of water, sand and unspecified toxic chemicals are injected using high pressure to crack rock to release natural gas, there are bound to be problems with the local groundwater.

The mess has to migrate somewhere. The residents of Thermal, Cali. have been having some major problems with their water systems, which are contaminated with arsenic. The town is trying to involve local residents in the cleanup process to figure out the best way to improve the water system. It is vital to modern life to have clean, fresh and safe water. This story hit the media when it was discovered that a local gas station in North Coventry, Penn. had a leaking diesel tank that was trickling diesel into a shared well. When the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) got into the act, the gas station was ordered to shut down until further notice and completely empty their three tanks.

It seems that the diesel had made its way into a stormwater basin before anyone really knew what was occuring. The DEP spokesperson said they were working with the station to trace the source of the leak, but that the station owner for some reason had sent in an incomplete report the month prior. Naturally, that made things even harder to track, because the details of their fuel sales versus fuel left on hand were not accurate.

The contaminated water was actually reported by a business across the road from the station. The store’s owner called the DEP to let them know they could smell diesel when they turned on their water, and that an employee had tried to take a drink of water and it burned her mouth.

At this point, one of the questions that could have been asked was whether or not the homes and businesses in the area were aware that water distillers would have provided them with a safe source of clean, fresh water? Furthermore, were they aware that they could also protect their homes and businesses from contaminated water by having water distillation systems installed?

This incident only became a story because someone could actually smell and taste the diesel. It’s honestly not safe to turn on your tap these days and take a drink right out of the faucet. At least, it’s not safe if you want to be sure you are drinking fresh and clean, uncontaminated water. Most of the water on tap in our homes today is not what it looks like. It may look OK, even smell OK, but chances are it is not OK. Many of the organisms hitching a ride in the water can’t be seen or smelled, but they can give you health problems if you drink them.

Take the case of Clinton, N.J. and their local water department, who just recently said it was OK for the town to start drinking their tap water without boiling it. It would have been safer and much healthier if the town residents had just invested in water distillers or water distillation systems for their homes. It would have saved the guesswork over whether the water was OK to drink or not. If you assume it’s not safe to drink, you’ll come out ahead by using water distillers.

Even though the residents were hit with a “boil water advisory” that lasted for about a week, they still can’t be sure what the cause of their contamination problem really was, since the town is having trouble tracking it down. Apparently, one of their wells produced an untreated water sample that tested positive for E. coli. The town took further samples, and when they also came back positive for the same bacteria, they took that well out of service.

Town officials said that the water samples were “untreated” water and that the E. coli was “not in the treated water supply.” That may be the case, but when you’re relying on someone else to treat your water before you drink it and it was “untreated and contaminated” before it was treated, you’ve got to wonder whether their assessment of what is safe and what isn’t is accurate. Who really wants to take the chance that they are drinking water laced with E. coli? Fortunately, in this particular case, the residents of the town were notified promptly that there was a problem and they did a good job of getting the word out. The town said residents should boil all tap water for one minute, which would “kill the E. coli and other organisms in the water.”

That phrase bears investigation – kill other organisms in the water. The town is fully aware that the tap water does have other organisms in it. This isn’t something that many people would be very happy with if they understood what the other organisms might be. This gives all the more reason to use water distillers. It appears the local water authority and health department attempted to warn those who were on the beach and swimming to not go in the water. They said they posted signs, spoke to lifeguards and gave a heads up to local park officials. The people who got sick after swimming in the water aren’t impressed and say the warnings were not enough.

One person, who took ill after being in the water and inadvertently swallowing it, was extremely ill for at least three days. His business partner stated to local media that if people “had” known about the sewage spill, there would have been no one out in the water. Despite what the residents of the area said, the officials insisted they’d issued an advisory to not swim or do any other recreational activities in the bay from Oleta River State Park to Bal Harbor and Haulover Park. For whatever reasons, the word did not get to where it needed to be.

Amidst all the quarreling over who did and didn’t do what, the underlying issue here is contaminated water, and the fact that even in America the inconceivable may happen when we least expect it. While this incident involved water people swam in, you can bet that part of that water system was diverted for use as drinking water. The thought of that would not start off anyone’s day with a bang. It seems that a 72-inch line ruptured and spewed sewage for over 12 hours before the city got it under control by shutting off the valve and rerouting the flow. The residents in this small town that’s officially 261 years old have had a long running battle with local authorities over the quality of their water. Why? Because for many years they have had problems with contaminated water wells that have tested positive for fecal coliform bacteria. Not a nice thing to find out about the water you have been drinking under the assumption that it was fine.

The residents might want to know that to solve this problem; they could make use of water distillers and water purification systems, as distilled water is the cleanest, freshest and safest water to drink.

In a moment that can only be defined as truly astounding, the US Environmental Agency (EPA) actually trucked in bottled water to residents in Rogersville, Mo., when 12 wells had been identified as being contaminated with TCE (trichloroethylene) and E. coli. Not a nice combination to be sure and no one seems to know where the contamination is coming from either. Hence the water being brought in to residents until the matter is sorted out.

To be fair, the EPA is also providing filtration systems along with the bottled water, but there is no word on what type of filtration systems are in place and whether or not they are truly effective to eliminate these two contaminants. Those on well water are not particularly amused by this state of affairs and while grateful for the bottled water in the short term, are concerned about the purity of that water. While this is a smart gesture and shows that the government agency is concerned about the people in the area, the EPA may have been better off to offer water distillation systems and distilled water.

Local residents are right to have concerns about the water they are getting, since 25% of the bottled water on the market comes from tap water and just about 35% of all gastrointestinal illness can be attributed to contaminated tap water. The nasty thing about tap water is that it is full of a variety of things no one should drink; not just one of two things that would cause concern, but thousands of chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, drugs and bacteria. In other words, you’d probably want to think twice before using bottled water as a substitute for distilled water, even if it were only for a short period of time.

This radioactive water leak at a nuclear power plant started over a year ago (April 9, 2009) and since then it has been slowly spreading underground in the area aquifer. One might ask why something wasn’t done about it before now. Now, this contaminated water is beginning to seep into the aquifer that gives New Jersey residents much of their drinking water.

What evidently happened is that at least 180,000 gallons of tainted water was released from the Lacey Township plant. The water seeped out through two small holes in separate pipes. No matter how it got out, water testing has revealed pollution levels 50 times higher than Department of Environmental Protection standards in the aquifer that provides a large portion of South Jersey’s drinking water. The pollution of course is in the form of radioactive water.

Of interest is the fact that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Exelon say that this plant – the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station – may operate safety until it is 60 years old. It is now 40 years old and beginning to fall apart. Environmental groups have been raising the alarm over this facility for some time without any success. Now the powers that be will be forced into taking action to clean up their mess. Evidently the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner is aggressively ordering those responsible for this leak to clean it up pronto.

Unfortunately, the big wigs in charge of the plant and the plant’s owners took a ‘wait and see’ attitude and hoped locals would trust them that the spill wasn’t really a big deal. It’s a big deal now when the drinking water of South Jersey is threatened.

Something that the residents of New Jersey may be interested in is water distillers and water distillation systems. One of the largest employers in the town of Framingham admits it did dirty work in a facility just down the road from a school. The records show that since they first set up in the city, they have always been in trouble too over toxic spills. They’ve even been sued. While the concerns are definitely valid, the town would have been well served to advise local residents to use water distillers.

The latest flap is over the fact that trichloroethene and other contaminates were found in the flooded basement of a family home also just down the street from the chemical company. This latest incident comes on the heels of the chemical company (General Chemical) being told they need to clean up a whole section of contaminated soil and groundwater around their operation.

The shocking part of this story is that the house with the flooded basement is barely a stone’s throw away from this facility where all manner of toxic acids, oils and other hazardous materials are trucked in, handled and sent on their way someplace else. It’s a huge stretch of the imagination to think that “nothing” ever gets spilled.

Even though the state environmental agency is starting to have enforcement talks, nothing seems to be happening with any great degree of alacrity. The results of the tests on the basement water and the groundwater under the neighboring house showed elevated levels of trichloroethene (TCE), tetrachloroethene (PCE) and other toxins. The chemical company president insists people are overreacting.

The state ordered indoor air quality tests at the home. In the meantime, a whole lot of people are beginning to think about other alternatives to tap water, such as water distillers and installing a water distillation system. This would be the only safe alternative in situations like this.

To add icing to the cake, General Chemical used to own two other properties in the same area of the city. Those two properties are now abandoned and boarded up because of contaminated groundwater. It’s not too much of a stretch to imagine just how the groundwater at those two properties got contaminated, not in light of recent events. City officials insist that what once was the proper way to handle toxic chemicals is no longer viable and something needs to be done immediately.

Earlier attempts to take the bad water out of the ground and replace it with clean water drove the toxic plume around the chemical plant towards the school which panicked everyone in town.

While the Canadian military is indicating that they have been upfront, open and transparent about the contaminated water supply at 14 Wing Greenwood, base residents aren’t so sure that is actually the case. Aside from the issue of honesty, many base residents are also checking out a viable alternative to drinking anything on base, water distillers.

Evidently wells tested on the base have revealed extremely high levels of perfluoro-octane sulfonate; otherwise known as one of the additives in foam used to extinguish fires and integrated into water-repellant fabrics and clothing. The nearby village has been less than impressed with how the base handled its water issues.

It wasn’t until April 2010 that base personnel were told not to drink the tap water. That directive impacted close to 1,300 people. Everyone on base was supposedly told the reasons why and what the military was attempting to do about it – hook into the municipal drinking water system. None of the information released revealed how many of the wells on the base were affected because the upper ranks of command insisted it was a security matter. Base residents were beginning to consider whether or not to look into water distillation systems to deal with the problem.

It seems the chemically contaminated water was first noticed January 29, 2009, but for some reason the military decided to wait for further tests to confirm there was actually a problem before telling anyone about it. They didn’t think it was a huge deal, as no one had reported sick. Now that the base is hooked into the municipal water lines, they’re trying to figure out how bad the problem really is and how much of the base’s groundwater is contaminated. One thing is certain, and that is there is no contamination outside the base.

Local officials aren’t impressed and insist they haven’t seen much in the way of solid information about the contamination, in particular the extent of it. Health Canada says chemicals like this one on base tend to get into the environment via treated or untreated municipal waste water discharges, which then leaches into the groundwater. Interestingly enough, just about 600 tonnes of perfluorinated chemicals came into Canada from 1997 to 2000 in a variety of different products. Even though the supplier quit production in 2002, three tonnes were brought into Canada for use in fire suppressants.

While no one seems to know how the chemical got into the base’s water system, the fact remains that people had been drinking it and no one told them. The other disturbing issue is just how long the water was contaminated before anyone caught on to that fact? There are a lot of unhappy base residents over this issue.

In light of this kind of news, perhaps base residents would indeed benefit directly from water distillation systems or water distillers in their homes and elsewhere on base. Just the thought of what happens to be present in our water supply is pretty scary – chemicals so toxic that they build up over time and do us a lot of harm. Large farms that process animals for human consumption or who provide a commodity (like milk) from hundreds of cows, have no real way to adequately handle the huge amounts of waste produced by their animals. So much of the water used at home is left to flow into the drain when it could be used for other things like watering the garden or the lawn, or maybe even washing your car. This “gray water” runoff is usually what’s left over after you have a bath, wash the dishes and wash clothes. Whether you know it or not, that kind of “secondary” water use in the home generates 40 gallons of water a day for each person in the house. Oregon’s most recent innovative attempt to expand the definition of gray water shows they are on the right track to utilize this water and make a significant difference to their state water resources. Their definition rules out using water contaminated by toxins or human waste, so they’d be nixing toilets and washing machines where the homeowner washes cloth diapers. Obviously, gray water isn’t intended for drinking, but it does have a place in the greater scheme of the world of recycling as it is still safe and useable water for other things.

While using gray water is relatively safe for some things, this raises the question about tap water in American homes. Is it safe to drink? The answer to that question is, “No.” There are so many contaminants in the water no one would be able to name them all. They range from herbicides and pesticides to legal prescription drugs and illegal street drugs, not to mention chemicals we dump in the water to make it “safe.” Dumping Chloramines and/or straight chlorine into the water to kill the bad gunk just means the “other bad gunk” being killed is replaced by chlorine, which is just as bad. The most recent debacle concerns E. coli in Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks. An investigation is being conducted that a government agency broke state laws by not releasing data that E. coli was above safe levels in the lake – a revelation that would make most people bolt to the Internet and purchase water purification systems for the home and cottage.

The Missouri Attorney General is investigating a complaint that a state agency violated state law by refusing to release data that showed E. coli was above safe levels in the Lake of the Ozarks. That gives one pause for thought about how that would affect tourists, not to mention the local citizenry. Evidently the Department of Natural Resources turned down multiple requests under that state’s Sunshine Act to release the relevant data. Water distillers would be in big demand with the community facing that kind of a problem.

The Department’s director is walking a rather fine line these days indicating that his department should have immediately released the report detailing the levels of E. coli in the lake. This in light of the fact that the department had apparently kept the report hush-hush for about a month because they didn’t want to affect tourism or cause public panic. The concern and panic happened anyway when people found out. The situation was merely compounded by the Department of Natural Resources hiding the facts. The lost time for people to purchase water distillers for their home and at the lake was crucial.

If the government in various states is withholding information of this nature because it doesn’t want to lose tourism dollars or cause people to get into a flap, what other information about the water haven’t they told us? Interesting question, don’t you think? The public has every right to know about the water in or from which they wash, bathe, play and drink.

No one knew for sure what happened to contaminate the town’s water supply, but they did know they were relying on water rolling into town in large tankers. Town residents spent four long days finding alternative and creative ways to cook, as well as figuring out how to clean the kids following playtime.

Many of those residents didn’t have water distillation systems in place which could have been used to distill the trucked-in water. The cause of this disruption in everyone’s lives was due to the fact the town found E. coli in the municipal water supply.

The precise source of the bacteria wasn’t pinpointed other than to indicate that the water may have been contaminated with either human or animal waste. E. coli causes headaches, cramps, nausea, diarrhea and a whole host of other nasty symptoms.

Those with compromised immune systems, meaning youngsters and senior citizens, faced a very real threat to their health. Luckily, no one in the small town of Putnam, Connecticut, became sick. Those who did have water distillers on hand were able to weather the long shut-off with some degree of aplomb.

In the meantime, over 2,600 people, homes and businesses across town had their tap water shut off. While there may have been just one area of town affected, the administration took no chances and shut all water off. The fact of the matter is that a town using a contaminated well has already happened in many places in the United States, with the latest being a small town in Illinois. Many of the town residents don’t even have water distillers or water distillation systems in place either.

The twist to this story was that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) dismissed the Crestwood residents’ concerns, telling them the water wasn’t “that” contaminated because it was diluted with Lake Michigan water. To the unending astonishment of the whole town, the EPA stated the amount of vinyl chloride contaminated well water had been adequately diluted by lake water. This is like being a “little” pregnant.

The town and the EPA were on the same song sheet indicating that the mixture of the two sources of water actually made it harmless. Eleven thousand residents wanted to know about those who had been drinking contaminated water since 1985, and rightfully so, considering the risks of cancer and other illnesses potentially caused by vinyl chloride. To say the town isn’t convinced the risks are minimal is a major understatement. Vinyl chloride in small amounts over a span of many years has the potential to be deadly and telling people otherwise is a foolish move.

Needless to say, the end result of these revelations and the assurances that nothing is wrong hasn’t gone over well with those who live in the town. So far there have been several lawsuits filed accusing the village of making people sick with the contaminated water. Close to 25 years of drinking contaminated water is enough to give anyone nightmares. Evidently the EPA is doing a bad job of trying to point the finger of blame at someone else who no longer works for the department.

With all the flap about the contaminated water and how it may have affected people’s health, questions have arisen about what would make home water safer. It’s bad enough that vinyl chloride was in the water along with other chemicals called volatile organic compounds, but what could residents do to provide safe water for themselves and their families?

Well, if you don’t wonder, then you are likely drinking some really poor quality water. If you do wonder, you no doubt have a water distillation system at home because you are a smart water consumer. Just when you thought this process was beginning to make some sense, and you were feeling protected to a certain extent, along comes the news that not all water treatment facilities even bother with the pH balancing step.

Next on the list is something called flocculation, which sounds a bit like chunks of things that float on the top of the water and wait to be hauled away. You’d be right in that assumption. The plant tosses in some small particles of something that remains unidentified, which attracts material that makes the water a cloudy color. The cloudy goo sticks to the particles, rises to the top, and gets skimmed off.

All this and the water has not even been filtered yet. Most municipalities use a sand bed filter, but this does not remove all the contaminants in the water. It only catches the chunks big enough to be trapped. Smaller particles like viruses, chemicals and bacteria make their way through. A word on synthetic chemicals and their molecular size: synthetic chemical molecules are smaller than water molecules, so guess what happens to them? Right, they don’t get filtered out of the water.

Manufacturers selling bottled water are going to make their product sound like the “be all, end all answer to drinking tap water.” The odd thing is that tap water is usually better for people (so long as it is distilled.) You may be wondering how water gets polluted in the first place. Where does the pollution come from? In most instances there are usually two types of pollution sources – the non-point source and the point source. Not to confuse anyone here, the non-point source generally comes about as a result of runoff directly spilling pollutants into a water source. If you are thinking things like herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals, you’d be right on the money.

On the other hand the point source would be considered to be the result of a broken pipe, underground line, or ruptured sewage tank leak. If we’re dealing with a sewage/manure leak or spill, this is referred to as organic pollution. These types of pollutants are mostly found emanating from large agricultural operations.

The water returns to the source hotter than when it was used, which affects oxygen levels with the same results as organic pollution – dead fish and plants.

Ecological pollution, call this Mother Nature pulling a fast one, results from natural disasters like landslides or a volcanic eruption. That’s a really good question and the answer in most cases is a qualified maybe, and it could depend on what type of water purification system you have in place. However, having said that, have you had your water tested lately? If the answer is no, then it might be time to do that. It’s not a complicated process and the results don’t take forever to come back.

Although tap water is indeed tested by the Environmental Protection Agency, it isn’t done with the same frequency as it is performed at water treatment facilities. This is because they just don’t have enough people to go around to test our reservoirs. So what about your drinking water at home?
