Break Out the HSAs as a Viable Health Insurance Option

People tend to avoid HSAs because they aren’t familiar with how they work. They’re well worth considering because they save money.

Health savings accounts, otherwise referred to as HSAs, are very well advertised, but for some reason people tend to avoid them. There isn’t a really clear reason for that because on closer examination HSAs have the distinct advantage of saving you money, and who doesn’t want to do that these days?

The one thing you need to remember is that the HSA may only be used in combination with a high deductible health plan (HDHP). The two health care companions function as a tag team, to distribute health insurance and operate as a payment plan. When used together, you get some nice price breaks and the actual benefits extend beyond what your typical Florida health insurance plan may offer.

Setting up an HSA is actually really easy. All you have to do is go to the bank or another financial institution. Remember, you also need to get signed up for an HSA qualified HDHP that will have a minimum deductible of anywhere from $1,200 to $2,400, depending on whether it’s individual insurance or a family plan. So, along those same lines, if the plan is just for you, you may put in the maximum of $3,050 or $6,150 for a family. For those over the age of 55, they may toss in an extra $1,000 every year as a catch-up contribution.

You know what the best thing is about an HSA? You’ll love this if you happen to be younger and in fairly good health, or, older and in good health. If you have a good year and don’t have that many medical expenses, you get to keep what’s in the account for future use. Not a bad deal hey? In fact, you can keep adding money every year, so long as you don’t go over the contribution limit. Note: the yearly contributions have a set limit, but the total savings in the account can be as much as you let it grow. That’s pretty appealing; along with the fact you get to control how you spend the money.

Did you know that HSA money is tax deductible? And, not only that, but it grows “tax free” for as long as you use it to pay for “medical expenses.” That brings up a question I hear quite a lot and that involves what people can use their HSA account money for in the first place. The answer to that is you may use it for alternative treatments (acupuncture), some over the counter medicines and even most dental procedures. Hint: not all insurance companies count these payments as part of your deductible, so you might want to check that out first.

The good news is that the list of HSA qualified expenses is nice and long, which is a great benefit to you, because it means you don’t need to separate coverage for things like prescription drugs, dental or vision care. This saves you money as well. The bottom line is an HSA is worth trying.

However, there is encouraging news on the horizon, in the form of a bill in the works in Missouri that would require many health insurance carriers to cover autism.

The legislation mandates health insurance plans to cover up to $45,000 annually for applied behavioral analysis therapy (from a licensed provider) for kids under 18. To avoid the possibility of fraud from people posing as therapists, or less than honest therapists wanting to cash in on the insurance wagon, the state is planning on creating a new licensing process. If the bill is signed by the governor, the new rules would roll out on the 1st of January, 2011.

One of the other benefits of this bill is that it includes an annual adjustment of the cap that is tagged to inflation. While it sounds good on first read, those with autistic children do need to know there are some potential catches. Those catches would be that the law would only apply to group health insurance plans regulated by the state; that would mean plans bought through small to mid-sized companies.

For larger corporations, ones who self-insure, this bill would not apply, as they are federally regulated. For any small business that has fewer than 50 workers, an exemption may apply if they prove that the mandate caused their rates to rise over 2.5% the previous year. In a nutshell, there will be various options that include autism coverage for treatment and for diagnosis, but this will not be attached to all of the plans sold in the state.

This is great news that may have many other applications nationwide if the bill proves to be a success and keeps the overall health care budget down, thanks to early intervention allowing those with autism to live a fairly normal life.

California Health Insurance Agent Does His Utmost to Celebrate National Chocolate Chip Day

Matt Lockard tried to make his Ventura office a place of cookies and milk on August 4th – to no avail.

He knew what day it was going to be on the morrow. Since boyhood, he’d eaten chocolate chip cookies of every variety, according to their kind – according to their chip. He liked them with milk as far as cookies went, he wasn’t that much into sweets, but tomorrow was an extraordinary holiday celebrated with panache that was definitely not Christmas, or even Halloween. What kind of milk would he serve for his clients as they made their appearances on that festive day? Last year he’d attempted goat’s milk, but it had strangely curdled before its time. He liked almond milk with cookies, or even coconut milk, but would never skimp by going skim. He’d be prepared on this 4th of August – a true feast day precisely a month beyond the anniversary of our nation’s birth.

Matt laid out the platters of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies, a Tollhouse variety that his daughter had lovingly baked, and she was going to come by the health insurance office around lunch time to see how things were going. This year Matt’s clients would understand, and grasp the holiday’s significance, without pigging out on the cookies.

When the first client appeared, a 74-year-old intent on Medigap coverage, it began. “Bet you can’t eat just one …” Matt hinted, nearly pleading. She couldn’t. Thirty-four cookies dwindled to twenty-six before she was gone just eight minutes later.

The cookies have to last all day this year, Matt mused, but such a well-intentioned hope was a pipedream.

California Health Insurance Agent Tries to Have a Relaxing Work Day When It Really Matters

Beware the Ides of August, National Relaxation Day, and as luck would have it, Matt worked right through it.

In lieu of a day off on that fateful August 15th, Matt Lockard wanted to at least have a relatively easy day. Most of his fondest memories in some way were involved with National Relaxation Day, or at least a degree of relaxation.

By 11 a.m., he’d seen seven clients, customers and prior policyholders march through his office door, families with their family plans, the elderly and the newlyweds, and even a llama that ambled in off the street and actually wasn’t a customer.

A woman from somewhere in the Middle East came by in a burka, and a pirate wanted one of those special policies to protect his interests on the high seas – as he was wary of other pirates with all that’d been going on lately in the Indian Ocean. They came in to make the day ultra-hectic and it wasn’t even lunchtime yet.

Cripes Matt Lockard whined (fortunately only in his mind’s eye), it’s National Relaxation Day and I can’t have a leisurely day just because my gig is California Health Insurance policies. It seems that everyone in California has some kind of health care concern that a policy can address.

Just then some college students came in, and they wanted a group policy that would protect them from potential injuries incurred at keg parties. Five of the six were young men, all enrolled in California schools getting in-state tuition and the straggler was an attractive young woman, unmarried but majoring in animal husbandry she soon revealed. Ten minutes later, Matt was at it again, part of a flurry of frenetic, attending to needs of people that had to be met.

More pirates in the afternoon, but these happened to be transplants to the Los Angeles environs from Pittsburgh. A bald-headed centenarian walked in preceded by his cane, and he wanted a policy that would somehow last to provide a legacy perhaps. Soon it was five of the clock and the sun was beginning to approach the horizon, and Matt Lockard, a man who had missed his chance to relax, was about to sit. The phone rang just then …
