On June 6, 20-year-old Manuel Rivas and a fellow student, 19-year-old Natalie Valles, were kayaking on Lake Nasworthy in San Angelo, Texas, when a jet ski collided into them. Valles was recovered fairly quickly from the lake and taken to a nearby hospital for medical care for her head injury. She was released later the same day. Rivas was not found until the following afternoon.
The jet ski driver, also a resident of San Angelo, did not sustain any injuries in the crash. According to the police report, he said he had been heading into the setting sun, and due to the glare on the water he did not see the kayak until it was too late to avoid the crash. The 29-year-old driver was administered a field sobriety test and passed.
Watercraft accidents are far more common than one may think. Many enjoy spending time during the summer months at lakes or rivers, but many boaters have little or no experience handling a watercraft and have not taken lessons or safety courses to ensure that they and those around them are safe.
