Oscar Pistorius, better known as "Blade Runner" goes on trial Monday for allegedly murdering his girlfriend.

The murder trial for “Blade Runner” Oscar Pistorius begins Monday in South Africa.  He got that nickname because of the prosthetics used while running and competing in the Olympics.  The case received wide publicity when he shot his girlfriend while she was in the bathroom of his home.  “Blade Runner” claims that he was acting in self-defense at the time and thought he was in the midst by a home invasion.  South Africa has a high crime rate and a lot of violent crimes.  There have been allegations that Pistorius often went into violent rages and that was that there was no reason to suspect a home invasion was occurring at the time of his girlfriend’s death.  Thus, the case is very similar to the “Stand your ground” trials we are seeing in Florida and how “reasonable” it is for a suspect to be in fear for their lives.  The “Blade Runner” faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
