The most common reasons for big rig accidents

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) there are typically ten common reasons for crashes and interestingly, fatigue ranks at number seven, not number one.

The main reasons for commercial truck collisions usually relate to an interruption of the flow in traffic, a trucker not being familiar with the road they are traveling, not paying close attention to what is going on around them as they drive, driving far too fast for road conditions, performing an illegal maneuver, distractions and inattention, fatigue, a medical issue, incorrectly guessing or anticipating another driver’s actions or reactions and distractions caused by a person in the cab or an object.

It is expected that these reasons may change over the next two years, due to policy changes in the industry, such as higher speed limits and better road conditions. The key factor to prevent accidents is, at all times, be alert and aware, and follow the rules of the road.
