A Michigan factory worker was killed when a five-ton piece of equipment fell on him.
The man, whose name withheld by police at the request of family members, was 42 years old and employed at MollerTech in Shelby Township. At about 1 p.m. on a recent Thursday, the man was working on a crane when a large die – a mold for forming building materials – fell on top of him and trapped him beneath.
Police and firefighters responded to the scene and attended to the employee, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shelby Township Fire Chief James Swinkowski said that the accident was still under investigation and that it was unclear how it happened, but they saw no indication of foul play.
Ingo Pridoehl, Mollertech’s commercial director, told reporters that the employee’s family were in the company’s thoughts and prayers. The plant’s 140 employees were sent home for the day, and it was not clear when it would re-open, he said.
The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration said they would send a representative to the plant to investigate the accident, which is standard procedure for a death in a workplace.
