The “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day” is October 10. The Transportation & Development Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers sponsors the campaign along with federal government partners and safety advocates. Florida is one of the states that have taken measures to implement new roadway safety standards. Of growing concern is the increasing senior population and their ability to drive safely on the roads. Florida’s Safe Mobility for Life program targets older driver safety.
Roadway improvements include wider pavement markings for visibility, larger street signs at high-traffic intersections, and better signage and signals at work zones and pedestrian crossings. These strategies help to lessen accidents, injuries, and roadway fatalities. The Roadway Safety Foundation has noted how adjusting the timing of signals, adding left-turn signals and lanes, and rumble strips on the shoulder also cut down crashes.
The best safety tips involve sharing the road safely with other vehicles, big rigs, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Drivers should always wear their seatbelt and avoid aggressive driving and others who are exhibiting this behavior. Cutting in front of another vehicle can cause an emergency braking situation where you can risk your life. Same goes for driving in a big rig’s blind spots – if a driver is unable to see you in the mirror, chances are that they will not have enough time to brake.
Distracted and drunk driving can equally put you at risk of an accident. Texting, talking on the phone, and getting in the driver’s seat after a few too many drinks can endanger your life and others. Pull over if you must answer a call and if you are not in the right state of mind, call a taxi or friend to pick you up and take you to your destination.
With pedestrians and bicyclists, drivers should be aware of stopping behind the white line to give enough room. Pay attention to no turning on red signals and do not try to beat a red light. Of equal importance is backing out of driveways and parking spots. Double check that no walkers or bicyclists are about to approach. Paying attention can prevent many accidents and injuries from happening.
